As a fairly newly promoted Sergeant in the sixties, I was involved in a street brawl which resulted in a broken rib and a broken nose. The CMO decided I should be employed on light duties (off the streets) for three months and as a result I entered a period where I saw an entirely different police force. I spent the three months as a Court Sergeant at the Old Bailey, a much sought after job in those days. I was filling the place of the regular incumbent who was also off duty through sickness. As far as I could tell the duty required me to sit in No1 Court all day, there to prevent any disturbance that might take place, I had three City Constables (I was Met myself) hovering about with me. Each Court was similarly manned. The high light of each day was lunch at the City’s Snow Hill Police Station where there was a large canteen serving hot meals and an adjoining bar. The bar was operated by the City Police who it seemed, each day purchased a large joint of beef. This was roasted and provided large crusty bread beef sandwiches, which with a pint of bitter comprised my daily lunch. On my third week the weather turned very hot, the heat of the court room and droning voices of the barristers, plus over indulgence at lunch, at last got to me and I nodded off, only to be rudely awakened by someone shaking my shoulder and the voice of His Honour The Judge saying ” Yes young man go with that Police Sergeant, the one sitting at the back who I like to call the Sleepy Sergeant, he will show you where you can use a telephone”. Every head in the court turned towards me. The next day I was posted to Information Room at C.O. (NSY)where I was allowed to play with the teleprinters for the rest of my three months at least the clattering of the printers made sleep unlikely.SP.
My relative is Mary Emma Counihan (listed as M. Counthan above). Her parents immigrated from Ireland in the 1860s to VC and she was born in 1878 in Virginia City. I have her graduation photos from the school if you are interested. After marrying William G Gray and living in Goldfield and Tonopah, she moved to Reno and died there in 1925. She is my great grandmother.
