First there was Irene. On August 27/28, 2011 the floodplains of Landgrove defined themselves for the first time in probably over a hundred years. Damage in this town, as far as we know, was limited to Karl Pfister’s white plastic covered hay bales floating merrily down the stream. Local river towns, as well as many in the state weren’t so lucky. Londonderry’s main drag was under almost 6 feet of water on that Sunday, and all the houses and businesses on the river side flooded badly. Propane tanks, dumpsters, cars, and Cory Stoddard’s U Haul trailors were lightly whisked away by the ferocious West River. Weston’s green looked like an island, and the Playhouse sustained hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage. In Jamaica, the bridge into town on Rte 30 was slammed and destroyed entirely by a large tree, and the river handily swept away four houses, seriously damaging more. In the state, current claims total $12.25 million, and cite damage to 8 town offices, 11 wastewater treatment plants, 6 highway garages, 5 libraries, 7 fire stations, 7 covered bridges, more than 700 homes were severely damaged or destroyed, and multiple farms, roads, and bridges.
With all the bridges down, and roads closed, we had a rough time getting out of Vermont for our Maine vacation. Finally made it on August 30th. We stay in the top of this fake lighthouse/boathouse. Darren Post, 6th generation lobsterman and family’s bait house to the right.
The lobster boats leave this pier every morning around 5:30, and head out to the Mussel Ridge Channel in Penobscot Bay.
Pep and Radar spend a lot of time hanging out, sniffing on the deck, that overlooks the inlet.
We brought 6 1.5 lb lobsters home to eat with my mother and a friend. These are the carcasses being boiled down for bouillabaisse stock.
