Guston’s Regret

After a puppyhood spent with a lively family in Martha’s Vineyard, Guston struck out on his own.   During the first four years of his life he’d longed to live in Passaic New Jersey, with a career in kitchen appliances.  But now – after living his dream for five years he wasn’t so sure he’d chosen the right road – the road that truly suited his personality.  Every designer gas stove, each stainless steel deep freeze refrigerator began looking the same to Guston. Most evenings he sipped his carefully chosen one imported beer at a local dive, listening to the hounds crooning the blues, and dwelled on his regrets.  He wondered if it was too late to become a concert pianist.  He wondered if he was capable of stepping outside of his comfort zone at the late age of 9.
